New lens for Sony E Mount - Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8
We had the opportunity to get to know the lens at a Tamron event and test it ourselves. We can share our first impressions with you in this article.
Second E-mount lens from Tamron
The Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 is a fast ultra-wide-angle zoom that has been specially developed for mirrorless system cameras with Sony E-mount. It offers outstanding image quality and a continuous aperture of F/2.8. Together with the 28-75mm F/2.8, it joins Tamron's lens series for the Sony mirrorless system.
Wide-angle for Sony E-mount
The new wide-angle lens also impresses with a length of just 99 mm and a weight of just 420 g, making it more compact and lightweight than any other lens in its class. The ideal lens for discovering natural and urban landscapes from a new perspective.
Construction and feel
Immediately noticeable: Just like the standard zoom 28-75mm F/2.8, the new wide-angle is also extremely lightweight and compact. Despite the lightweight body, the workmanship feels very solid, especially as the body is made from a single piece. Neither when focusing nor when zooming does the barrel move outwards, so the size of the lens remains the same and the lens hood can be attached directly to the body.
Optical quality
The optical construction includes LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) lens elements, which have been positioned in such a way that chromatic aberrations are suppressed as far as possible. In our initial tests when photographing against the sun, we did not notice any negative interference effects. In conjunction with the most advanced camera functions of the Sony Alpha series, a very high imaging performance is achieved over the entire focal length range, which fully exploits the potential of high-resolution sensors. Of course, the new 17-28mm is also ideally suited for the APS-C sensors of the A6000 series.
The high-performance autofocus
The autofocus system has a sensor that determines the current focus setting of the lens and an RXD stepper motor. They ensure particularly high speed and precision when focusing, enabling the photographer to keep even dynamic objects continuously in focus. The ideal conditions for successful snapshots. The AF also works so quietly that virtually no disturbing noises are recorded during video recording.
Short close-up distance for photos with particularly dynamic perspectives
With the 17-28mm F/2.8 you can even take photos at close range. At 17mm, the short focusing distance of 19 cm enables fascinating close-ups at a reproduction scale At 28mm, the shortest focusing distance is 26 cm (1:6). In addition, a very shallow depth of field with an attractive bokeh is achieved with a wide-open aperture. This effect is all the more pronounced the closer you are to the subject when taking the picture.
