Long awaited, much speculated: Everything about the new Canon EOS R5 and R6 highlight

Reading Time: 8 minutes - July 9, 2020

There has long been speculation as to whether the previously published specs are possible and whether the camera will deliver what it promises. Today, Canon has finally unveiled the new Canon EOS R5 and we were able to take a look at it in advance.

The professional mirrorless system camera with full-frame sensor offers photographers and filmmakers brilliant sharpness and resolution with 8K video on a 45 megapixel full-frame sensor. In this article, you can find out what other exciting features the Canon EOS R5 surprised us with. The little sister Canon EOS R6 as well as several lenses and accessories were also presented. You can find more information below.

Overview of the EOS R5

The R5 is equipped with an electronic OLED viewfinder with 5.76 million pixels, as well as a rotating and tilting touch LCD with 2.1 million pixels in HEIF format. The built-in Wi-Fi can be linked to the brand new Canon image.canon cloud system to capture and transfer images and videos on the move. The EOS R5 can then transfer images automatically, allowing you to edit them on the move - or automatically download them to your PC at home. The two new cameras R5 and R6 will not replace the EOR R for the time being, but rather position themselves in a new class, roughly comparable to the 5D series. The R5 is the absolute top model, while the R6 is positioned between the R and the R5.

From the outside, the new R5 has remained true to the design of the EOS R, but there have been some functional changes. The much-mocked touch control panel has been replaced by a comfortable joystick and the on/off switch has been made easier to grip, so there are even more minor differences that make the EOS R system more grown-up.

Get more out of your videos!

The ability to capture stunning 8K video opens up exciting new possibilities for your creative projects. The Canon EOS R5 impresses with internal RAW recordings with an 8K full-frame sensor at up to 29.97 frames/second. However, if you are already satisfied with 4K recordings, you have the option of up to 119.88 frames per second in the 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log Format or the 10-bit-4:2:2 HDR PQ: ideal for those who love slow motion! Videos can be recorded both internally and externally, although external recording performance drops to just 59.94 frames per second at 4K. The Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus is available in all video modes at 4K as well as 8K and ensures that the focus is optimally positioned on the subject in your shots. The EOS R5 opens up completely new worlds of film and dynamic new ways to tell your story.

These video modes can also be exciting for photographers, as individual images can be extracted from 8K and 4K videos. A photo taken from an 8K video therefore has a resolution of 35.4 megapixels.

More than face detection

Thanks to the extended CMOS AF with eye, face and body detection for people, as well as AF tracking for animal subjects, the EOS R5 can recognize dogs, cats and birds - also here on the body, head or eyes. This ensures precise and sharp images, no matter how fast your subject is moving.

The DUAL PIXEL CMOS AF II impresses with an even larger AF area by allowing the AF points to be positioned completely freely. Even in extremely dark situations, the R5 should still be able to focus reliably thanks to the -6 EV. Dual Pixel AF is also available in all video modes!

Reliable storage technology

When it comes to performance, it's worth looking at the details. The powerful combination of CF Express and SD UHS II card slots allows you to take more pictures over a longer period of time and offers you optimum security for your recordings. It is also exciting to know that the particularly memory-intensive video formats can only be recorded on the CF Express card. These include: 8K RAW, 8K ALL-I, 4K 100p/120p, 4K ALL-I HEVC (H.265) (YUV422, 10-bit), 4K 50p/60p ALL-I H.264 (YUV420, 8-bit)

Similarities between the EOS R5 and R6

Both cameras in the new EOS R line feature:

  • 5-axis image stabilization, up to 8 stops when combining in-body IS and optical IS
  • AF area: approx. 100% x 100% coverage
  • 1053 automatically selected fields for object detection
  • Eye, face, head detection and tracking of people and animals (incl. dogs, cats and birds)
  • 12 frames per second (mechanical) & 20 frames per second (electronic)
  • HEIF format, automatic exposure compensation with priority on face, DLO, focus bracketing
  • Video: HDR PQ, Canon Log, Zebra
  • Joystick
  • LP-E6NH battery, charging and operation via PD-E1
  • Compatible with image.canon

Differences between the EOS R5 and R6

The sister model R6 comes with a 20 MP sensor and slimmed-down functions, but also includes 4K 60p and over 6,000 AF positions.

Conclusion on the new EOS R series

Until now, you might have thought that the camera was specifically for video, as Canon mainly talked about 8K. However, it is now clear that it is also particularly interesting for photographers with 45 megapixels and many features. The topic of video is also becoming increasingly exciting for many photographers and is helping to expand their own range of services. As the first mirrorless full-frame camera with interchangeable lenses to record 8K video, we are curious to see when we will see more 8K cameras on the market. So far, the R5 and R6 have impressed us with their familiar Canon handling and if they are just as good in practice as they are in theory, then we can give them a clear recommendation!
