"Favorite places" photo competition - these are the winners

Every issue of Schnappschuss magazine is of course accompanied by a photo competition! This time, however, with very different ideas, which are not necessarily mutually exclusive: quite the opposite! It was all about 'favorite places'. The Eiffel Tower in Paris, the annual vacation destination of your childhood, the summer chess game in the park, the forest behind the house, your own allotment garden, simply the sofa at home or having your favorite people in your arms - favorite places make you feel safe, you enjoy visiting them and something connects you to them. They are places that give you the feeling of being happy right there and reflect this happiness.

We received over 4,000 pictures! You made the theme so individual and versatile that we got to see a great variety of great pictures! The choice between special moments, your favorite people, landscapes, places or very special memories made the decision particularly difficult for us. We would like to say a big "Thank you!" to all 1,500 participants! That was really outstanding. We would like to congratulate the winners and say THANK YOU!

First place in the favorite places photo competition1. Place Werner Becker

The winning photo - "Taking a moment for yourself"

First place goes to Werner Becker with his fantastic calm shot of two people fishing. The photo was taken from the hand. However, the situation with small waves and many windmills on the horizon was too restless for him. So he put the photo on a new layer in Photoshop, used the "blur" tool to create the blurred background and then masked out the anglers and the fishing rods.

It was a bit of work, but it was worth it! A justified 1st place, congratulations!

2. Place Stefan Petershofer

2nd place - Morning forays

Stefan Petershofer is delighted to take second place!

"This picture was taken in the fall of 2020 during one of my usual morning forays through the forest with my dogs. They are usually always the same ones and the first mushroom pickers were already out and about at this time of day. And that's exactly who I photographed here. It actually looks a bit scary in real life at first glance."

"In this case, I used a Sony A7III and the FE 24-70mm GM. But I often take my Fujifilm cameras with me in the forest because I particularly like their look in the forest. In the beginning, it was usually very "bokeh-heavy", i.e. with very little depth of field (e.g. mushrooms, butterflies etc.). Somehow the taste became more and more special and now it's almost only forest in combination with beautiful light situations, but mostly in connection with fog. I would actually describe myself as a "nebulaphile". Photography has been my hobby for a few years now, more precisely since I started taking our dog (there are now two of them) for daily walks. In doing so, I paid more and more attention to nature and then at some point felt the urge to somehow "capture" the whole thing."

3. Place Praxitelis Dimitriadis

3rd place - Silhouettes

3rd place goes to Praxitelis Dimitriadis. "The picture was taken during an evening walk through the city. The orientation of the Hackerbrücke is such that you can capture beautiful silhouettes during sunset. The small group enjoying an after-work beer at their "favorite place" caught my eye. And what is a favorite place without the people who make it a favorite place? I tried to capture the beautiful atmosphere and mood in my picture through the silhouettes. Photography is my passion and since I was born and raised in Munich, I now try to capture the city through the "eye" of my camera and highlight new, interesting perspectives. Inspired by street photography, I love to wander through the city in the golden hour."

4. Place Reinhard Burg

4. 1st place - A trip to New York

This photo by Reinhard Burg was taken in New York in May 2005 during a photo trip.

"I photographed the motif on the roof terrace of an apartment complex in the middle of the city with a fantastic view in all directions. I was particularly fascinated by the chimneys set into the roof. The result was a series of photos from which the photo I sent in was the most impressive. I originally took the photo on a color negative film with 400 ASA on KB film. Hence the relatively strong grain. I scanned this photo and, after some experimentation, converted it into a black and white photo. I did not make any manipulations. I even left the slight barrel distortion."

"The photo was taken with my Nikon and the fantastic Sigma 12-24mm lens, which I bought from Foto Koch at the time. The incredible angle of view of 114 degrees really comes into its own in this photo." Reinhard Burg is an advertising photographer who learned his craft "from scratch" and was already involved in panoramic photography in analog times.

5. Place Lucie K. Behrens

5th place - Burgau beach

Katharina Behrens inspires us with her shot of her favorite place! "The picture was taken in Portugal, on Burgau beach last year, when I lived and worked in the area for a few weeks. "

"I've been traveling for 10 months now and working as a photographer in countries like Portugal, Tenerife and the Netherlands."

6th place Carsten Schröder

6th place - Joy

Sixth place on the subject of "Favorite places" goes to Carsten Schröder.

"It was taken while I was shooting street photos in Saarbrücken. I saw the two of them, put the camera on with a smile and photographed them, which amused them both. Hence the happy laughter in the photo. Street photography is one of my hobbies and every now and then I get great results. You just need patience. Taken with the Fuji X-T3 with 23 mm fixed focal length at ISO 250, f3.6 and 1/100s.

About Carsten Schröder:

"I've been a photographer for a long time and pass on my self-taught knowledge to other photographers in courses and workshops. "

7th place Benny Kasper

7th place - A moment for eternity

Seventh place goes to Benny Kasper. He describes his thoughts on his picture as follows:

"It's sunrise and the first rays of the sun appear above the fog. I am alone above it all, looking into the distance. For that moment, it feels like my own sky, free of everything. I wish this feeling would never end.

The person is looking for a place to be free from the stress of everyday life, a moment of peace and everything else that surrounds them. They find a favorite place above the clouds."

Benny Kasper also has an NFT series where this image is a part of. "Over the Fog it feels like in Heaven" is the name of this collection, in which he photographs various towers in the fog.

8th place Nicolai Brügger

8th place - Aurora

Nicolai Brügger's picture was taken on a photo tour in Norway/Lofoten and takes 8th place!

"I went to the Lofoten Islands with a friend to watch the aurora for a week. The mountain is called Offersoykammen. I already had the motif in mind before the trip as I was looking on maps to see which places would be suitable for such a picture. As the night was forecast to be clear, we went there for sunset. We reached the spot through deep snow and steeply uphill and waited several hours until the aurora finally appeared."

9th place - Karl Eißner

9th place - staging the morning

Karls Eißner discovered his favorite place while walking his dog Molly.

He staged the picture with a friend at eight in the morning, just as he imagines his favorite place. Together with his dog, he likes to enjoy the morning hours, the great light and a moment of peace before the daily grind begins. Having a faithful companion with you at all times is something very special and makes you enjoy your moment all the more. Congratulations on this great picture!

10th place Sven Frank

10th place - Jöriseen

Last but not least: Sven Frank is the 10th winner of the photo competition. It was taken in summer 2020 during a hike near Davos in Switzerland. It shows two of the Jöriseen lakes, which can be reached on a hike from the Flüela Pass. Simply a wonderful spot on earth. After a few years of "normal" photography, I was allowed to try out a drone that summer and this picture was taken. As I'm in the region relatively often, it was a completely new perspective of one of my favorite places.
