Fujifilm X-E4 Review

Review: Fujifilm X-E4

The new system camera in mini format

The Fujifilm X-E4 is the latest addition to Fujifilm's X-series cameras. It is a mirrorless system camera with APS-C sensor and significantly smaller than the full-frame models of the competition. But what about the features and image quality? We'll take a look at this later in the practical test.

Small body with lots of power

The Fujifilm X-E4 is a very compact and, at 315 grams, currently the lightest system camera from Fujifilm. You can choose between a silver and a black body variant. With 26 megapixels (resolution 6,240x4,160 pixels) and a more powerful processor, the camera delivers excellent image quality. The powerful quad-core processor "X-Processor 4" enables lightning-fast autofocus, which focuses on the subject in up to 0.02 seconds with automated face and eye recognition. The autofocus is equipped with 425 sensors. The viewfinder resolution remains equally sharp in this series at 1,024x768 pixels. The front and rear are kept minimalist. The large setting dial at the top of the camera can be used to select a specific shutter speed or to activate the automatic program mode.

The large touch display can be swiveled 180 degrees and, at 900x600 pixels, is even sharper than its predecessors. Unlike its sister model, the X-S10, the X-E4 has no optical image stabilizer or pronounced grip and is therefore significantly smaller and somewhat lighter. However, Fujifilm offers the option of attaching a separate hand grip to the lower edge of the body or a thumb grip to the upper edge. If the lack of image stabilization bothers you, you can still stabilize videos later in post-production.

Fujifilm colors

Here you can choose between the typical Fujfilm film simulations. The X-E4 has 18 to choose from, inspired by classic image styles from the era of analog photography, including the "Eterna" simulation, which imitates the look of older Hollywood films with strong contrasts and reduced saturation.
RAW files can be converted directly from the camera and it is possible to adjust various settings such as white balance, contrast or saturation beforehand.

Professional video also possible

With the Fujifilm X-E4 it is possible to film in 4K and the camera also uses the entire sensor. This means that if you want to take photos while filming, the photo contains the same image section and is not "cropped". In addition, the camera can film in 10x slow motion in Full HD (recording at 240 frames per second, playback at 24 frames per second) and another big advantage when filming is that you can
take 30 minutes of footage at a time. This was different with the X-E3, for example, where you can only film for 10 minutes.
For the video professionals among you, you will be pleased about extra functions for video recordings such as recording with greater color depth (4:2:2) via the HDMI output, recording in log format or the insertion of a hatched pattern for overexposed areas of the image (i.e. that zebra look). The X-E4 promises a long battery life with the NP-W126S battery, which is charged via USB-C. A power supply unit is not included, only a suitable cable for charging. However, common USB-C power adapters that support the USB Power Delivery standard will fit, for example a current iPad power adapter can be used without any problems. USB-C can not only be used to charge the battery, but also to operate the camera, meaning you can continue to use the camera while it is charging at the same time
A UHS-I SD card slot is located next to the battery.

Conclusion

The Fujifilm X-E4 delivers good technology and image quality in a compact camera body, making it ideal for street photographers. Especially if you also use a 27 mm pancake lens, for example.

Thanks to its light weight, the camera is the perfect travel companion. The long battery life, fast autofocus and easy operation also speak in favor of the camera.
